This p trap connection is new to me

Is this how things go together now? If so does this thing plug into the sanitary tee, or do you stub in a 1 1/2 piece of pipe. It looks Yanky and I only want to do this once. I don’t recall using anything like this in the past. I’ve already scrapped the bottle trap gizmo as it just looks unreliable. Also I did slice into the blue PEX water line maybe 1/32nd but it doesn’t leak but I think I should replace it? This remodel is near finished

Yes there should be a sanitary tee on the wall. The tee should be connected to thr piping in the wall. From the sanitary tee I'd use a trap adapter and then slip joints to build the trap. This is for easy service.

Yes fix the gash in the pipe. It's better than ruining your kitchen.
