New shower starting from scratch and looking for shower faucet suggestions. Just a shower with wall mounted arm/head and want a handheld. Looking for good quality it's in the master bath. What brands have you had the best success with?

Hansgrohe is excellent. You'd typically buy the universal iBox and almost all the valve options fit into that box.
I have 50 years experience and am redoing my own master bath. I might use Delta but have enough money to spend on Hansgrohe at least for the shower.
Delta, Kohler, Pfister, Moen, Brizo are ok with lifetime warranty. Grohe and American Standard have been deprecated by being sold to a conglomerate called LIXIL which now has no local reps, and customer service very poor and "lifetime warranty" only if they make a one-time exception on parts which never get sent (honestly).

I'd have to pass on the Hansgrohe, a little over budget. I understand and appreciate quality. Are any of the box store units good? Is there a difference in what Ferguson sells?

Avoid any outlier brands or Premier. I'd stick with Delta, Moen or Pfister for lower pricepoint. They are solid performers. Delta has a lot of plastic in their valve handles, but, we use them in multi-unit dwellings and they do hold up.

I never had a problem getting Delta replacement parts. They sent me a new spout once, no questions asked.

They even upgraded a kitchen faucet for one of my accounts when replacements were not readily available

I never liked Kohler or their "tech" service. I noticed Kohler said the "bold look," but I never saw the word "Quality."

I called Kohler once for a leaking Realto Douglas valve, and the tech said to use propoxy and seal it.

I asked what if someone has to remove it? he said, Don't worry, let the next guy worry about it

One of my accounts bought a "Kohler" fill valve for $37.00, it was a Fluid master 400 A, which cost $4.43

I called Delta and Moen today for some recommendations, should have asked the guy working the window at McDonalds drive thru.
I have had success with Delta standing behind my kitchen faucet that I purchased at Lowes. It's about 25 mi to Lowes or HD so wanted some ideas before I went. I'm a little confused as it looks like some don't come with a valve, just the exterior parts.
I'd like a faucet that controls the temperature and the flow, trying to figure out how the handheld is controlled.

There is an amazing site called "Google."

I would suggest you go to Google and ask your question to meet your satisfaction.

The shower body supplies mixed water temperature, and you have to decide if you want to use the tub spot, if required, or just use it as a shower. The shower arm you can attach the handheld shower.

If a tub is also required, then you want a divertor, either tub spout type of part of the shower body.
BTW there is NO good customer service anymore

People want to get paid for doing nothing

GOD FORBID if they actually know their job or had any idea of their product line

Yeah, I've gotten sticker shock over the price of faucets and the only thing anyone cares about is what finish or trim.
Don't know if anyone else notices but the Google ain't what it used to be especially with the AI suggestions that many times are incorrect.
I guess part of the problem is we didn't want pre-mixed water temps and wanted a capability to turn the water off while you soap up and then turn it back on at the temp we set to rinse off.

Delta 17 series and Moen Mcore 3 series will allow that. Both have diverters available for multi fixture setups.
