Did a remodel and the toilet is now three feet behind a wye connector to a five foot section of three inch waste line and then the three inch down waste line. Prior the toilet was about a foot or less in front of the wye connector. It is a Toto toilet and has a strong flush.

Whenever flushing anything more than liquid waste there was a thud-thud sound (like the drum beat in law and order). Sound was two or maybe three seconds after flushing. Not water hammer. Isolated it to the three inch vertical waste line hitting the stud it was next to. Theory is the greater distance is giving the waste more velocity when it hits the down line.

Braced the line like in this photo. Does this look ok? It is cinched on fairly tight. Any concerns with humidity expanding the stud or thermal expansion of the pvc? If I loosen things I’ll get vibration sounds, but I don’t want a broken pipe.

Top left of waste line is the five foot horizontal section then the wye connector and toilet is three feet back from there. The wye connector shown with diagonal line on the right is to a separate bathroom (also a Toto, but never caused a vibration thud sound when flushing).

Thanks

Metal strap on plastic is not allowed.
Wrapping the metal contact area with thick tape (10 mil or thicker) will prevent abrasion and give long life.
We would not allow customers to have plastic for pipes that can make noise. Cast iron only...but we were like that, take it or leave it.

Thank you. Will get some tape on that today. How about tightness and possible humidity or thermal expansion?

Is this the kind of tape? https://www.lowes.com/pd/Christy-s-2-in-x-100-ft-Plumber-s-Tape/3433996

I can undo the metal strap, wrap the pipe in this and then restrap if that should work.

Seems like switching to a plastic strap would be simpler/better. E.g. this stuff:

Also, if when you started there was a gap between the pipe and the stud, and your strapping pulled it tight, it would be better to shim the gap in a couple places and then strap the pipe at those locations. That way you aren't deflecting the pipe with your straps, just holding it firmly where it wants to be.

Cheers, Wayne

Strapping the pipe tight doesn't hurt anything. The pipe mostly expands lengthwise.

Thanks. Got notified of this post while in the Lowe’s parking lot and went with plastic strap.
