There is a strange sound coming from the pipes behind our shower. We live on the 2d floor of a 6 floor apartment building (coop). We moved in June of last year but didn’t hear noises until November/December. The prior owners renovated the bathroom about 10 years ago. When we turn off the valves in our bathroom (which control the water supply to both the guest bathroom question and to our private bathroom in our room, which shares the wall opposite to the guest bathroom’s shower), we don’t hear the noises at all. It comes day and night, usually lasting for 2-5 seconds. It is loudest in the early morning and after 8pm.
The building plumber tore down the wall behind the shower (attached). One plumber believes someone is “pivoting” inside the shower body itself and believes the whole thing needs to be replaced. Another plumber thinks installing water hammer arrestors to the branches leading to the shower cartridge can work. A third plumber (didn’t actually come, spoke to on the phone) thinks the hot water pipe might be on a stud and makes the noises when it expands/contracts. I wish there was a way to attach a short video to hear the noise.
