I've tried unsuccessfully for weeks now to remove this Delta 1500 Series Monitor so I can change the cartridge. The handle won't budge after the screw and small retaining nut are removed from the handle. Thirty years of calcium buildup I guess. I believe I can get the circled bonnet nut loosened with a strap wrench and a lot of WD40. Will the whole thing come out then? I'm not worried about reusing any of the parts as I have a Delta 1500 to 1700 conversion kit. I am worried about damaging the valve body and copper water lines.

WD (stands for water displacement) won't do anything except displace water and can't get under ring.
The body on those valves do not have small copper tubes at the rear of the body the way that old Delta did, but, of course there may be 1/2" copper hot and cold piping.
Unscrew the crystal lever, maybe it is locking on, otherwise those Delta handle assemblies are loosey goosey...mostly we get complaints that they are too sloppy/wiggly...which I agree, they are.

pic of what the face of the handle assembly looks like to refresh my memory might help
The temperature dial is removed by that center screw and there's a retaining nut behind it. Once they are removed the handle should come off. It won't.

under the temperature dial is a hex nut as you even noted. of course, the handle will come off as it went on in that order.
