How much mortar should be used to bed a tub, also do I shim the tub feet even though I'm setting them in a mortar bed

I use small piles that the tub when set down over them, can squish out and conform to the tub.

If you know where to set the tub feet, and can set them correctly, you may not even need the mortar.

By set are you referring to the shims, also after shimming the apron is about 3/8" off the floor. I have that size subflooring to lay in the rest of the bathroom can I run that about 1"-2" under the apron space
