If you get rid of the furnace in a masonary chimney then you should power vent the hot water tank or put a liner down the chimney for the regular draft style tank. It ends up cheaper to buy and install the power vent type. A regular draft type tank does not vent properly in a masonary chimney in a cold climate if it is the only appliance in the chimney.
