I am a DIY. I have done a lot of DIY soldering. Last water heater valve I replaced leaked because when soldering, it got too hot even with a wet rag on it. Can I disassemble a 3/4 inch gate valve then solder and then reassemble? This way I do not have to worry about damaging the internal parts of the valve. Valve was purchased at the Big Box store. Thanks

the chinese gate valves from big box stores can be super cheap, be gentle when handling.
A few years ago I was contacted about a radiator valve (steam) leak, and it caused a lot of damage.

The valve name was "American" made it another country

I called my supply house and was told that a manufacturer may offer domestic valves for 3 to 4 times the price of imports BUT the contractor has to ask for domestic.

Hey, wait a minute.

This is awkward, but...
