"This sounds like a winner to me-if you want cheap soft water for the (shower anyway)"

Our special Crystalline Quartz Technology. Specially cured crystals act upon the water to create a softer, energy-enhanced shower.

Notice that it doesn't actually say "soft water". If it did, they could be charged with false advertising. You will get a softer shower from the loss of pressure through the filter.

Quartz, sand, and glass are mostly silicon dioxide which is a very inert substance that will have absolutely no effect on your water. The only effect will be the outflow from your credit card account and the inflow to their account.

IOW a salt cartridge isnt feasable..nor does it exist..?

Salt doesn't soften the water. The ion exchange resin softens the water by removing calcium and magnesium ions from the water and replacing them with sodium ions. The salt is used to regenerate the resin by replacing the calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions.

There are cartridge softeners that will soften low flows for a limited time, but you couldn't afford them.

There are chemicals that will precipitate the calcium and magnesium under very controlled conditions, which are used in large water treatment plants, but you can't pack a water treatment plant into your shower head. And the precipitate would come out with the water to deposit scum on you and your shower walls.

There are some in-line shower head filters that will take some chlorine out...probably not very great. At least that is somewhat feasible.
