in my basement is a small bathroom. 48” w X 112”. On one side a toilet and 15” sink and on the other a durastall II shower.

The room needs updating as this is my every day but use shower. The durastall is getting wear and the toilet is slow leaking, ruining the vinyl flooring.

Floor drain is a right drain on durastall on outside wall. How should I plumb in an upgraded shower into such a small area?

I can send pics to provide info.

A sketch of the overall current layout might help. A couple of things regarding the toilet:
- code calls for an opening at least 30" wide...there must be at least 15" either side of the centerline of the toilet.
- an elongated toilet doesn't necessarily mean that it is further from the wall, but it can

There is a minimum walkway past things like the sink and the shower must be at least 900sqin, with an opening NLT 24" wide to enter it. Most doors inswing, which can limit your placement of things, and if you have the wall room, you might consider a pocket door, or even one that slide against the wall verses a hinged one. That can open up more area and give you a bit more flexibility.

Once you get around to building your shower, I suggest you check out www.johnbridge.com if you are thinking about tiling. Also, check out the videos on www.schluter.com on their Kerdi shower system. While not actually new, (it is to many) that type of shower install is much higher performing than the conventional one. A few companies make similar systems, so you can shop around, but Schluter has some of the most comprehensive videos showing the technique to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.
