Shower Valve Connection Type

Can anybody identify the connection in this photo? I've taken to two local plumbing supply stores and staff at both said they've never seen it. I need to replace the shower faucet control.

It might be an old Speakman valve. Do you have the handle and wall plate? If you take the valve apart and take some pictures we might be able to figure it out. Counting the splines on the broach would help to narrow the possibilities down.
