Shower Valve Body for 2 handle retrofit replace upgrade ?

Hi

I have a two handle shower stall from the 1950s and was thinking of changing it to a single handle with a smitty remodel cover plate.

Are there some shower valve bodies that lend them self better to this application / job?

I was thinking of going with delta but wanted to check here first.

Also I heard someone mention a caddy (spelling?) strap? What is that I googled it and couldn't find anything. A person told me it is an adjustable strap similar to that some canned ceiling lights have , the arms that are adjustable for mounting. I guess the idea is to assemble most it with a caddy strap and them put it into the wall to finish it.
