We’re getting ready to remodel our bathroom ourselves (complete demo) and would like to change the tub/shower configuration and need a little help. Currently our shower fixture and tub fixture work independently of each other so there is no divert. There is a showerhead with a single handle, and then the standard 3-piece tub fixture with a spout and 2 handles, 5 pieces in all. We’d like to change to a 3-piece shower fixture (head, handle w/divert, spout) and want to know if this can be easily done. Thanks.

Well it depends...
Is this one of the old tubs where the spout comes out through a hole on the side of the tub?

It shouldn't be a problem. You will need the tile wall redone but as far as the plumbing goes not a problem.

Since we're ripping the old tile out that won't be a problem. Thanks for your quick responses.

Code today requires the shower to have antiscald technology. There are two approved methods of doing this: pressure balanced and thermostatically controlled. Some may combine both. Thermostatically controlled is more expensive, but, I like it better. You can set one temperature winter/summer, first shower or last one in a series, and until you run out of hot water, the temperature will remain the same and you never have to touch that knob/lever or however that model controls the temp. Another advantage for some is that it provides you with a flow control. The single handle pressure balanced valves typically do not have a volume control - it is either fully off or fully on.
