i'll try to add some pictures.... but i had a plumber come and pipe up a new shower/tub valve.

he left the rough in for the shower head, a threaded elbow.

the shower head came with the polished chrome threaded pipe, which comes out straight and then bends down 45 degrees or so.

my question is do i need a straight piece of pipe sticking out of the threaded elbow so i can install wall board and tile?

Consider putting in a cheap 1/2 inch NPT nipple, not too tight, to hold the place during construction. Then remove that nipple after the drywall is up, and screw in the real shower arm

thank you!

question for the tile part though.

i'm using kerdi board and kerdi set and wanted to seal the penetration, it doesn't sound like that would be possible then?

The drop ear 90 is installed a a second well set back?
I don't know of any standard kit shower arms that will reach that far back. Why wasn't blocking installed closer to the finished wall?

At this point, should Doug install a brass nipple and a brass coupling (or equivalent) that will stay, and bring the thread closer to the finished wall to receive the shower arm?

That would be a good idea.
I wonder where they set the valve in relation to the finished wall.

i had asked the plumber when he did it to install the piping and shower valve so that all i would have to do is put up the sheet rock (kerdi board).

i wondering if i need to check the valve itslef.

it looks like he just used the existing backing that was there.

More pics...

If you are going to use the Kerdi seal around the pipe, the center hole has a grommet that will allow you to remove and later reinstall stuff. I'd use a nipple sticking out so you can get your hole in the proper position. YOu can add the seal later before you start tiling, or when you start to seal the seams and screw penetrations since you'd have some thinset already mixed up. https://www.schluter.com/schluter-us/en_US/Shower-System/Waterproofing/Schluter®-KERDI-SEAL-PS--MV/p/KERDI_SEAL

To get the shower arm to stick out a bit more, you may need a short nipple and a coupler. It looks like you can probably rotate the thing after the tile is up, but depending on the tile, it's going to be really close once the KerdiBoard is up and the tile installed on it. Make sure to fully embed the membrane...once done, you should NOT be able to see any of the trowel notches! Don't know why they show this except to maybe point out you do need to use thinset to bond the seal to the board (or in this case, the sheet membrane...same idea). There's a lip on that rubber, so it protects what's inside the wall. If you're not going to use the seal, you could use KerdiFix to fill in around it, but then, it makes it REALLY tough to ever remove later.

Thanks! I was planning (hoping to) use the kerdi seals around the pipe openings.

What would i need for fittings to extend that out a bit? Obviously when its done i just want the polished chrome showing and everything to be water tight?

Depending on how much or little distance you need, the shortest possibility would be the combination of these two fittings. If you needed it a little longer, you can get a longer nipple, but this is probably the shortest one you'll find.
