Can a S-style shower arm be used to lower the shower head or is it only used to raise the head ?

The S reversed will turn up the show head toward the ceiling. The lower the shower head get one of these.

If you picked up a 1/2” threaded stainless steel coupling and 6” long 1/2” stainless steel threaded nipple, you could use the s-arm in the bottom picture’s orientation by extending the side of the s-arm that will thread into the wall 90.
