One comment would be,
No need for Teflon Tape on slip joint connections.
If they don't leak, just leave them, but for the others,
Leave the tape on the HD shelf.

I'll wager the two mentions so far regarding the pitch between lav and tub are the right answer...I'll also wager that "plaza" took precautions to assure his pitch was right when he installed the drain.
Deductive reasoning makes me wonder if he didn't accidentally push the drain down when installing the p-trap and trip waste on the tub.
Though the lav is "S" trapped, it wouldn't have anything to do with the tub problem and might be cured with a studor vent...IF legal in his area.
He might also consider having a plumber look it over.

i think that was exacxtly it, i think when i installed the p trap initially two things were wrong, one as you mentioned, the p trap pushed the pipe down a 1/4 inch, enough to allow the sink to flow in to the tub, and to screw up the drain. also, the way i had the trap routed from the overflow it made a second bend which didn;t help.

also, i added the automatic vent under the sink casue it was suggested and its easy/cheap to do so.

either way - everything works like a charm now, i get the sucking sound when the tub drains, and the little tornado in the water that tells me the drain is working well...
