I have a Schrader valve on my well pump that appears to be leaking -- at least it spews an arc of water whenever the pump is working to draw water out of the earth. As the pump nears finishing , the arc diminishes to a trickle and then stops when the pump shuts off -- then I hear a hissing of air for a moment or two.

Is this normal? Is the Schrader valve on the pump (this is NOT the Schrader valve on the pressure tank) supposed to spew water while the pump is working? Is it supposed to hiss air afterwards?
--Or is this valve leaking and need to be replaced?

Also, should I cap it? Plastic, or metal cap?

Thanks for your advice!

A schrader valve should not leak but there are snifter valves that look simular. They are designed to allow air into the system so water can drain back into the well when the pump shuts off usually so the line does not freeze. They normally have ball check inside to prevent water from spraying out in the pump house.

If it is indeed one, Schrader valves are pretty much the same on anything they are used on, and you can certainly remove it to inspect it.

Once a Schrader valve is removed, you can see if there is anything wrong with the gasket seal on the pin part you removed, or the seat inside for corrosion, rust, debris, where the pin sits on.

Do not cap the Schrader. It needs to draw air in. And that hissing after the pump shuts off is a good thing. You just need a new Schrader or at least a valve core so it doesn't leak the air and then some water back out.
