I am on city water that uses chloramine for sanitation. Recently installed a catalytic carbon whole house filter along with a water softener. The carbon filter is before the water softener.

Obviously, the chloramine is there to sanitize so that no bacteria are in the water by the time he gets to the house. By removing the chloramine, the sanitation effect is also being removed. Could bacteria still get in to the plumbing from the ends (faucets, showerhead, etc.)? Would it make sense to “sanitize” the pipes by bypassing the carbon filter every so often?

If yes, how frequently would you recommend I do that? How long?

Yes.

I would think after you do plumbing work. Additionally, if you later detect an odor. Sanitizing the WH will likely take extra chlorine, because that is a big reservoir.

Got it. Thank you. So no need for routine sanitizing? Only if issues arise?

Also unrelated but could you weigh in on another post? I am new to the forum and my first post didn’t get “approved” by the moderators for a long time since I’m a new member. Maybe that’s why it didn’t get responses. You guys are typically so good about helping with these questions!

Appreciate your help in advance.
