Hi. I currently have a Toto toilet with a 12” rough in I am trying to replace. I got a Kohler with a 12” rough in, and my apartment building superintendent tried to install it and said it didn’t fit. How is it possible that one 12” rough in toilet fits, but another does not? I’d like to know this before I try another toilet. Is it brand specific, as in should I stick with Toto? Thank you for any tips or info.

Thank you. There are no baseboards. The wall is tile all the way to the floor.
I currently have a Toto Eco Supreme model 863-113. The attempted new toilet was a Kohler San Souci K-4007.

Have you checked your rough-in dimension more exactly? Measure from the plane of the wall finish behind the tank to the center of the closet bolts.
If you have under 12", then any given 12" rough-in toilet may or may not fit. The spec sheet for the toilet should specify the gap behind the tank when the toilet is installed in an exact 12" rough-in condition. If it specifies a 1/2" gap, and you have an 11-3/4" rough-in, it should work, while if you have 11-3/8", it obviously won't.

Very common, in general... but looking at https://techcomm.kohler.com/techcomm/pdf/K-4007_spec_US-CA_Kohler_en.pdf I don't see how that would happen with that toilet. That shows a huge amount of space.

Maybe the old toilet was not the model you thought.

Very helpful points and questions. So now I’m remembering that my super had told me the actual rough in distance was a little over 11”.
So I guess my adjusted question is: what rough in should I look for to be safe without just hoping it will fit? I guess it was just good luck that the Toto I have wound up fitting. Thanks again so much. This is helpful.

If you go with a 10" rough-in, then you will have a large gap (at least 1") behind the tank, with the toilet sticking farther out into the room (assuming all other toilet dimensions are unchanged).
Otherwise, measure your exact rough-in, and check the spec sheet of every 12" rough-in model you wish to consider to see if it will fit.

Ok, so can you tell from either of the links below what the gap behind tank measurement is for the Kohler I tried to install?
It claims to have a huge 2-13/16" gap. Yet you know the toilet you received does not. I would ask Kohler about the anomaly... is the document wrong, or you did not receive the toilet that matches the document?

That spec sheet says 2-13/16", find that measurement on the diagram so you can understand how to read it. But that figure is suspect, because that means it would fit in a 10" rough-in, and that there should have been no problem. Could be a typo on the spec sheet.
If you still have the toilet on hand, you can measure the space you need by sliding up against a wall (preferably with no baseboard) or other vertical plane until the tank touches the wall, and then checking the distance from the wall to the center of the bolt holes.
