Running a submersible pump with a generator

Can this be done and if so should I be looking for a certain submersible? How big a generator would I need?

Any submersible will run on a generator. But we have to know what size pump you have to size the generator?

To start with, 1/2 HP would be better. The table below is from the Franklin AIM manual. Note the note. The ability to start a pump varies with generators. Some are better than others.

The Grundfos SQ pumps may be easier starting.
