In the kitchen there’s a bare structural post. Going to build it up with wood or Sheetrock and add switches. Does the romex come down from the ceiling need protection( conduit-nail guard etc..) as it runs parallel to the post, or it the post is built up and the wires are set back enough it will be safe and up to code. Thanks in advance.

pic:is where the wires will come through the ceiling and run against the beam.

You could run the wires, and then box in the beam. That would look nicest.

If you want surface wiring, you could use small raceway, such as the Wiremold 500 or 700.

Code:
(F) Cables and Raceways Installed in Shallow Grooves.
Cable- or raceway-type wiring methods installed in a
groove, to be covered by wallboard, siding, paneling, car-
peting, or similar finish, shall be protected by 1.6 mm
( 1 ⁄ 16 in.) thick steel plate, sleeve, or equivalent or by not less than 32-mm (1 1 ⁄ 4 -in.) free space for the full length of
the groove in which the cable or raceway is installed.

Do as Reach4 suggests with Wiremold or equivalent. People have a habit of securing things on posts with screws and nails and don't expect hidden wiring.
