I'm replacing the waste and overflow drain of a tub along with what I assume is the original 1927 galvanized drum trap and several feet of waste pipe. Thankfully, I have easy access from my unfinished basement. My original plan was just to duplicate the current arrangement with PVC, but I realized I could gain about six inches of headroom in my basement laundry area by connecting the p-trap arm to the vent instead of the horizontal drain pipe.

Do you see any problems (code related or just practical) in my plan? Any advice whether to go with PVC or polypropylene tubing for the tub drain and/or p-trap in this exposed location?

I think OK if I presume the vertical pipe is a dry vent. If a wet vent, then I am thinking you are still probably OK.

1-1/2 inch slip joint polypropylene would be easier.
