I'm helping a friend remove their shower knob to replace it but can't figure out how to pull it off. There used to be a handle and screw that held that in place but that was lost.

It is a Moen shower handle. Any ideas or help identifying the model?

There was a small push in cap on the end, and behind that a screw that held the handle on.
Once the screw is out, it's a matter of pulling and wiggling to remove it. Perhaps some spray WD40 to help loosen it.

OK no set screw then look in hole on end as Terry said . I thought all Moen's had set screw or it was an old 1200 Moen ? but the trim plate can't be on a 1200 as it has diagonal screws

If the handle pulls out for volume, left right for hot cold, the cartridge would be 1200 or 1225
If the handle rotates to the left to turn on, then it's a 1222 cartridge.
