Removing header

Can anyone provide some information on if this header can be removed without compromising the structural integrity of the wall in the picture? I feel it was incorporated into the build for decorative reasons, and may not really serve a purpose.

I am not a pro, but I would bet that is structural.

I'm tempted to just drill holes to check for electrical wires, and then just saw both ends off. It's hideous.

If it was structural in would have to have cripples up to the ceiling, now the one above it--more than likely..my two cents
