Hi there, new to the club although I have been reading for years. Now I have a question for any well water folks out there. I have a deep well water system. We have a water softener (salt) and a pH correction tank (I think it uses Corosex??). In line and before the two previous mentioned tanks is a 10” string filter which I change every 3-4 months. When I change the filter it is full of this reddish/orange/brownish pasty sediment. I have always assumed it’s just clay, but lately have been thinking maybe it’s a bigger problem. I’m attaching a photo of the string filter. Any ideas what this is?

There is iron involved. It may include some clay also. If it is not clogging the filter, not anything to worry about too much. If the filter was clogging every 3 weeks, then you would be concerned.

Sanitizing your well will help some, and it is a good idea anyway. https://terrylove.com/forums/index....izing-extra-attention-to-4-inch-casing.65845/

You should also get a lab water test. You might benefit from an iron filter rather than letting the softener do the whole job.

Any smells, such as sulfur smell?
