Our well is about 120' in NY. We are surrounded by thousand of acres of water reservoir for NYC and local town. There is a waste water treatment facility less than a mile away. Live here for 10y and never had any bad odors. The treatment facility has reeked of sulfur/rotten eggs contiunuosly for about 2 months. During this time we have noticed short periods of strong sulfur smell in our cold water only. Not related to time of day or to amount of water used. The well also supplies our garden sprinkler system and never noticed any smell outdoors after lawn watering. Now our garden sprinkler has been shut off and still random sulfur, sometimes in morning but really random. Does not seem to correlate to the volume of our pressure tank getting its volume replaced. The pump was replaced about 10 years ago. The well is a very old design from the the 1940's with the well head in a metal box about 2 feet below ground. The local well company advice is to shock the system but I do not believe in coincidences with the treatment plant smell. On the other hand my two next door neighbors are not experiencing the same problem with their wells.

The drought conditions in the Northeast are the worst in memory. Could that be part of the problem?

Haven't had the odor in a few days now. Never smelled it in hot water, only cold... a bit odd huh. The underground aquifers in our area are probably very low. We are surrounded by thousand of acres of NYC reservoirs. Last year they drained them down to repair a major aqueduct damaged on the route to NYC (50 miles away) and the reservoirs were nearly bone dry for most of 2024. Then this year has been dry and they are still below normal levels. But even with low underground aquafers, why burst of smell lasting maybe 50g of water then clear? Pockets of gas in the aquafer?? Something more to google....
