Mother's house built in the 60's has randomly occurring banging water pipes. It happens when water is not in use. You can actually see the main line shake when it bangs. There is no thermal expansion tank on hot water heater.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Single isolated bang with hours between bangs? Series of bangs 1 second apart?

If city water, ask the neighbors if they get that.

I don't expect this is due to lack of a thermal expansion tank.

Municipal water? What's the water pressure and do you have a water pressure regulator on the main line?
