I am engaged in a major redesign/remodel of our second-floor master bath. The new layout calls for moving the existing toilet location about 12 feet horizontally from the present site. I plan to install a new Toto Guinevere 1.28GPF toilet.

I have a few questions:

1) What is the recommended/required drop per foot for a horizontal transit to the existing plumbing outlet site? (I have about 16" between floors.)

2) Does the existing venting need to be modified or moved to the new toilet location?

3) Other issues and/or recommendations?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It doesn't matter what kind of toilet you are installing.

1/4" per foot of pitch is the standard minimum DWV piping. Some places will allow 1/8" per foot on a 4" line.

The vent probably needs to be moved. It depends on what is currently there.

One thing commonly overlooked by beginners is the location/direction of the existing floor joists, as they cannot be compromised.

Thanks for the quick response.

I would appreciate if you, or another, could elaborate further, if possible, on the venting issues, as to what would determine whether the existing location would need to be modified or moved. Is it important for the venting to be at the toilet location versus the downpipe?

Thanks for heads-up on floor joists. That issue is under control.

There's a code rule on how far a trap can be from a vent based on the pipe size, but it is different for a toilet than for say a sink trap. Depending on what else may go into that line and where it is attached would determine where the vent needed to be. A drawing would help us help you.

Thanks, everybody.

Terry, are you saying, in essence, that the vent should be within six feet of the toilet? Is this a functional or code issue, or both?

Since it must be moved from it's current 12-feet-away location, is closer ebtter, or does it not matter?

6 feet is the minimum requirement for safe and reliable operation. In most cases functional and meeting code are considered one in the same.
