Hi, I just rented a new space and when I opened the dishwasher, noticed rot in the corners where the door hinges and there is a lot of it. It seems to run, though not well, but is this safe and sanitary? Thank you!! Jen

Rust by itself is not a health hazard. Holes where crud could accumulate could be. If the thing is actually leaking (maybe underneath), that can promote rotting floors and mildew. So, maybe, maybe not.

Clean and sanitize the DW before using it.

If it's still not clean, ask the landlord for a new DW.

Chances are, that LL will agree. I would.

I cleaned it and he wouldn't replace even though it looks awful, I just pray it's fine honestly, don't know what else to do as it runs fine.

Thank you so much, the owner is saying it works (it does seem to) so no need to do anything. Is there a risk to my health if it's rusted and the sides are broken down? Attaching pics:)

That rust is mainly beyond the rubber seals on the edge of the door.
All galvanized water pipes have rust on the inside of them. Just a little more iron in your diet. What does rust do for you? I'm not really sure.

Your dishwasher looks cleaner than some I've seen of that age. The basket at the bottom will unscrew and you can clean below that too.
