I think further home testing will not eliminate the need for an electrician.

My initial recommendation was to determine if simply resetting the main breaker may possibly have resolved the issue.

If resetting the main breaker (and other 2-pole breakers as a precaution) did not resolve the issue, then opening the panel to verify voltage on each side of each breaker would probably be a reasonable next step which Cheladamama, as an average homeowner, may not feel comfortable doing herself. If one pole of the main breaker is defective, then she will likely need an electrician whereas no incoming power on one leg before the main breaker, or an open supply neutral, that may be a utility issue since the utility will be responsible up to at least the meter.
