Yes the motor is thermally protected. It has an auto-reset overload that resets itself after a minute or so. That is when you hear the click and the pump tried to start. Typical pump failure. The pump cycles on/off for a few years with the old pressure tank system. Once you have used up all the on/off cycles, the overload starts to trip. You can try a new control box, but most likely you will need a new pump/motor. And if you don't want history to repeat itself, figure out how to stop the pump from cycling and it will last much longer.

Sounds like you have a 2hp sta rite jet pump. A rare item and expensive. Model msg?

From your description the motor is not coming up to full speed. After a little while running slow it trips the overload. These motors have both a start and run capacitor. Try checking these. Also check the centrifugal switch and governor under the top cover. Look for anything burned.
