Problem with BW on Fleck 5800sxt filter valve.

I have the above fleck head on a tank of Katalox. I have noticed this am that if I start a backwash, the head makes the quick motor sound and the BW timer starts its countdown, but there is no water flow…if I hit the regen button once it advances it to Rapid Rinse and I hear the motor and then the RR countdown begins AND there is water flowing as it shoulde be.…..Hit it again and it goes back to service mode...if i reach behind the head and spin the small "gear" that is visable back there and then do then manually kick off the backwash again, it will operate normally...I fear that when the head is calling for a BW in the middle of the night, its not really backwashing and just counting down until it fwds to the RR cycle. Any help in what the issue could be that would be not allowing the BW segment to flow water?

As an initial check, because the motor is not advancing the gear, inspect both the gear which you manually spin and the gear which it meshes with, to look for teh possibility of a missing/broken off tooth.
