i just replaced an 85 gallon pressure tank with a new one. the new one came set at 40 psi and i have the pressure switch set at 42 ish psi. but after i installed it and turned on the pump, the pump got up to like 50 or 60 psi on the guage next to the pressure switch (which is set around 42-65 psi) and i checked air pressure in tank and it was still the same at 40 psi.. i swear i have installed these tanks before and the air pressure will go up as the water pressure compresses the bladder, am i right in thinking something is weird?

Yes. With the water pressure higher than the air precharge of the empty tank, the air pressure will be very close to the water pressure. One of your pressure gauges may be off. You don't have a valve between the pressure switch and the pressure tank, do you? The first stop valve should be downstream of the pressure tank.
