The pump/water system in the family cabin is acting up. Jacuzzi submersible pump (1/2 hp) installed in 1995. Square D Pumptrol pressure 20/40 pressure switch (adjusted to 20 cut in and 50 cut out), with Jacuzzi hydrocel (which has been there since the early 1970s). I have recently had to repeatedly adjust the cut in pressure (by tightening the top/larger nut) to maintain 20 lbs. I have in the past been able to then adjust the cut out pressure to 50 lbs by loosening the lower/smaller nut. However, after having to tighten the cut in nut again, I now can't adjust the cut out pressure because the nut no longer touches the spring. It cuts out at about 60-65 lbs (which I believe is the factory limit) but I fear this pressure may be too much for my system. Do I need a new pressure switch? Do they go bad over time? Is there something else going on with the system? I appreciate the insights, as it is a 5 hour drive for me to get to the cabin to address this problem (one way).

Don't go back tot he cabin without a new pressure switch. They are cheap and easy to replace. You should never mess with the small adjustment. The differential will stay at 20 PSI and you can move both the on and off with the large adjustment screw.

Thanks, Valveman, I will make sure I have a new one next time I go up there. Doesn't sound that complicated to replace (I will make sure the power is off first). The current one has the four in 40 replaced with a 5 in Sharpie, and a Sharpie notation on the cover "reset to 20/50" so I presume the cut out was adjusted from 40-50. I have been trying to duplicate what a professional did previously. Thanks again.
