Hello,

First, thank you for the great forum and time taken to respond to questions.

Attached is a picture of my friend's existing basement laundry area. My friend asked if I could modify the existing washing machine drain. The washing machine currently drains into the utility sink. Utility sink drains to a sump pump, which has failed in the past and caused a flooding problem. (If I'm correct, the washing machine should drain into the stack.)

Explanation of attached pic:
- 2" PVC coming in from the right is the 2nd floor kitchen sink
- main stack is shown on the left hand side of the picture.

Question: is there an option to add a 2" drain and trap for the washing machine? I am sketching 2 options I am thinking about and will upload them shortly.

Thank you in advance for your help.
Hugh

Apologize for the rough sketch. I originally crossed out "Option B", but wanted to include here.

Again, thank you for your time and any assistance you can provide.

If that pipe is a vent, you cannot turn it into a drain, and if it is a drain, your trap is not vented.

Wouldn't they be able to throw an extra T in there before the new laundry drain trap and put a Studor vent on there?

You need to find a vent. An AAV would be ok if they are legal where you are. The crossed out version is not ok. The other one is, as long as you're draining into an actual drain I think I would use three kitchen sink drain. Or go all the way to the stack which is actually better.

Thank you all for your input. I'm going to research if an AAV is acceptable and also discuss with my friend (the homeowner).

Have a great New Year!
