Hello everyone,

just recently replaced some plumbing out of my well casing (also installed a CSV). I received my water test kit but wasn’t sure if I needed to wait before I collected and sent it in to the lab? Do I need to disinfect anything and then wait or just send it in? I have a spot (will be used for a future connection) just past the valve that I can put bleach into.

If the test includes a coliform test, and you care about the result, there are techniques. For any bacteria test to be meaningful, you have to follow proper sampling techniques including sterilizing the faucet. If you care about the coliform test results, care needs to be taken in sampling. There are variations on suggested sampling techniques, but they have some other things in common:

These all describe methods to avoid contaminating the sample. I think most positive coliform tests of deep wells is due to the sampling technique.

Thank you Reach4 for the info and feedback. I will sanitize the facet with alcohol. I will then soak a cotton ball in alcohol, light it, and hold it under for a bit. After that I will follow the instruction of running water for at least 2 minutes. I just wasn't sure if the new section would throw off the results. The well is 400+ ft deep but we get a lot of black sediment especially when it rains so I am have a coliform/bacteria test done as well.
