The impetus of this post in part is to learn of the purpose of the pipes illustrated within the confines of my photos that are found within a small utility closet in my apartment. Although I believe it is part of the venting system of this building, I am not quite sure.
More importantly, this post was constructed as I am concerned as it pertains to the fact that on the floor of the this utility closet, there is one capped pipe; adjacent to it more or less just equates to a hole in the floor. As a result of the fact that this building is powered by gas in conjunction with electricity, there was a part of me that feared that this hole should also contain a second capped pipe and/or be sealed, however, the hole is really devoid of any plumbing etc. I do see a small hole contained in this small empty void, which made me fear some kind of gas could potentially enter the unit. Was this hole created to give access to the capped pipe in the floor, or should it have been sealed? Within the image that features the hole I'm referencing, is just material composed of particle board essentially, which makes me think there should be no seal in the equation, yet thought simultaneously since there are two main pipes within the utility closet, perhaps there should be two as opposed to one capped pipe in the floor.
I just feared the hole would allow either gas, sewer gas, or radon to enter the unit somehow. I'm just accustomed to newer construction; that fact combined with the fact that my knowledge as it pertains to the realm of plumbing is essentially non-existent made me feel as if it would be advantageous to consult others that have a knowledge-base that pertains to this as opposed to me contacting management over a fear that is completely unfounded.
