Looking for an explanation of the different uses for green S&D pipe, black drain pipe, thinner walled white S&D pipe, etc. I am not sure which is used for which purpose. Thanks in advance.

S&D is typically only used outside under ground. In most cases the fittings needed to use it for a DWV system do not exist or are too bulky to use for that purpose.

For work inside or below grade within the residential structure, schedule 40 PVC or ABS is the norm. Cast iron is still great, but less common due to cost and availability.

The different types of thinwall are used underground outdoors, largely as a cost-saving measure.
