I'm replacing an outdoor softener in Florida. The softener has 1" male threaded plastic yoke and I am plumbing into schedule 40 PVC female threads. Should I use Oatey pipe joint compound or teflon tape?

Best would be to use a pipe compound suitable for PVC and tape both.

Oatey pipe joint compound appears to not be suitable for PVC, unless you find other info.

You should protect outdoor plastics from sun. This includes the softener and pipes. Latex paint can protect pipes.

Making a point?
I wanted to make the point that the Oatey Great White products says it is suitable for use on PVC because you said "Oatey pipe joint compound appears to not be suitable for PVC".

This is why i am asking the question because I see lots of conflicting information and the only response I have so far also seems to conflict with what it on the side of the bottle.

There is more than one Oatey compound. They have a product actually called "Oatey pipe joint compound" which looks not appropriate for PVC. Great white looks appropriate.

Any comments on using both tape and dope?

they make SS flexible hoses in one inch that fit perfectly on those bypass manifolds..
you ought to use them instead of jacklegging in the water softener

How is using schedule 40 PVC pipe on a water softener "jacklegging"?

This system is outdoors in Florida and every install I have seen uses PVC.

Stainless steel flexible hoses are not rated for outdoor use, right?

Fortunately, I got the job done and it did not leak. No thanks to this forum, which I have found to be mostly argumentative and intentionally obtuse in the responses.

My, my , now arent we in a bad mood today

I dont really care how you hook up your water softener.....

I just told you that they make SS flexible hoses with a one inch
female outlet on one side and a 3/4 female outlet on the opposite end.
I mentioned this just to help make your project go even easier......
they cost about 15 bucks each and they are just fine for outside use.....

I have had to tangle with a a number of softeners that were installed with one inch couplings
and the threads leaked near or on the bypass control and were damaged and nearly impossible to repair

so good luck to you
