I am pumping out of a lake approx. 150 feet using a jet pump. It works most of the time during the summer, but sometimes needs to be primed. During the winter is another story. I have a heat cable inside the pipe, but often the pipe partially freezes and the jet pump won't pull water.

My question is, does a piston pump self-prime and even though the pipe may be partially blocked with frost, will the piston pump still draw water?

What is a good piston pump for home use?
