but there are no indication of the brand - how do I know what will fit? The knob is too hard to operate - would like a lever style handle

Look at the sink faucets for a name, generally the same brand fixtures are used throughout a house unless there was a remodel. Was there a logo on the cap to access the screw? Is it just a turn or does it needed to be pulled out to run water and turned for temperature?

there was a slight remodel done at some point and all the sinks were corroded when we moved in and so were replaced. No idea what they were :(
This is the kind that only turns - thus how it was broken - guest thought you had to pull and since I had mentioned that it was hard to operate, they really pulled! now the screw is stripped and can't get it back together.

needs to be replaced anyhow, but I have my elderly FIL coming to stay in less than a week and need it done FAST! 2 plumbers and they still haven't figured out what can be purchased to replace it :(

There is a tube that unthreads which is holding the wall plate there. Remove the tub, counter-clockwise to unthread, remove the plate and we should be able to see the valve behind it. That would help with identifying it.
If you have any rubber gloves that would help to unthread it.

This should be the one if it doesn't pull to turn on. # 08 series. A Price pfister 974-042 cartridge will replace all of this and be much simpler.
