We had a master bath remodeled. We flipped the location of the shower and tub. We put a freestanding tub in place. After moving in, we noticed a foul smell from the tub. After some troubleshooting, we have discovered that the tub overflow is allowing sewer gas back flow because the ptrap was installed under the main drain but not between the overflow and the main line. The contractor has acknowledged this is the problem. Do we rip everything out and fix the plumbing? Are there alternatives?

How was the ptrap viewed? If there is access from the floor below or a basement it should be easy to fix.

Kind of hard to make that mistake. Is the plumbing vented?

Who did the plumbing work?

Do you have a picture?

Your description does NOT make a lot of sense, so either a picture or photo is necessary. I do not know what you mean by "main drain" but the drain at the bottom of the tub ALWAYS goes to the trap and the overflow connects to it between the two, somehow. The trap NEVER "connects between the overflow and main drain".
