My fiberglass shower had a slow leak around the shower drain so I decided to repair it with a brass Oatey shower drain. When I installed the drain, the rubber no caulk gasket that fits around your drain pipe continues to leak. When I tighten down on it with the internal nut, the gasket wants to distort and slip inside the nut and fails to snug up correctly. Any solutions?

I've been installing the new drains with Silicone where it meets the shower base.
Normally the rubber seal around the 2" pipe seals just fine though. It needs to be a clean and smooth pipe.
Worst case though, maybe some Silicone there too.
