No hot water

hello. this is our first winter in this house.

the hot water does not work in the upstairs sink and shower. nothing comes out. the cold works.

the hot water works on the main floor and the basement.

it's cold today.

IF it's because the pipes are frozen, the big mess often comes when they thaw. Prior to that, the ice can act like a plug...once it thaws, you could have a flood. If the pipes are PEX, the pipe usually stretches enough so it doesn't split, but that doesn't hold for any fittings that may be frozen along the way. FWIW, a hot line tends to freeze faster than cold since the act of heating it can force out some entrapped air. Once it cools off in the wall, that can make it freeze faster than the cold line, but if cold enough, both will freeze.

Are the tub/shower and vanity on an outside wall?

not on an outside wall that I can see.

Without knowing how your plumbing pipes are arranged, it's really hard to tell for sure. It does sound like the line is frozen, though. All it takes is a small section exposed to a breeze from outside...it doesn't take a big air leak to freeze a line.
