I am considering drilling a well on the other side of my house from the current water main pipe. Can a new water main tap into any cold water pipe in the house even if on the opposite side of the current main (old main would be removed)?

Yes, if the sizes are OK. Also pay attention to where valves are.

A well must have separation from septic.

Many towns and counties won't let you drill a well if city water is available. Monopolies like being monopolies.

There is no public water supply, there was a shared well 2000 ft away that entered from the other side of the house but the pipe failed. So the question is if the new well is on the other side, is there any restriction on which water pipe the main can can tap into to supply the house?

The answer is no, but you would prefer to have 1 inch and can usually do nicely with 3/4 inch. You would not like to use a 1/2 inch pipe to supply the whole house.

In planning, leave room for a softener and other treatment if you can. Do add some filtering -- at least a big cartridge filter.

Your new well should be at least 5 inch ID with PVC casing. I am confident your well driller would not be planning to put in 4 inch steel.

Thank you, yes I am leaving room for water treatment.
