... my neighbor has asked me to do something about the drainage that's going into his woods ...

If it was capped off before and didn't give problems, then re-capping it again shouldn't give problems ...
Obviously, you would think that if the pipe was below the water line that we would be having problems back at the house. But we're not, and never do; I can't explain why.

My suspicion is that you have not been having problems at least partly because the end of the pipe was open. But, maybe the only water your neighbor ever saw coming out was rain water.

Have whoever cleans and pumps your tank install an access riser with a lid at ground level:

And personally, I would have the same done at the other end and add an output filter:

But remember, the only reason it was open was because it was struck by the blade of a plow. before that it was capped for about 20 yrs, from what i'm told.

Sure, and I hope it still works fine for you and any new owner until its service life has ended. Progressive failure is part of the deal with any field system, and it sounds like your place has plenty of room for a new one when that time eventually comes.

500 ft of leach is alot. I use 100 ft on a 1000 gal septic with 5 people living in the house 4 ladies plus me..... I usually put the mesh over the end of the tube just so dirt don't go in. I dig a 3ft deep by 2 foot wide trench and fill the bottom with about 14-18 inches of drain rock then the pipe then mesh. Then backfill. The most important part is the filter in the outlet side of the septic. If you are in Clay dig trench deeper and use more rock. 1/4 inch slope in 8 ft for the drain pipes
