Need help with pump/tank/csv configuration

I am building a house for my parents 230' up the hill (about 100' of head) from my current home. Currently I have a drilled well at 230' of head with a 1hp pump and an 85 gallon bladder type pressure tank set at 30/50. This tank has 10.7 gallons draw down. My house is about 100 ' from this well. Could someone please guide me on hooking up the new house to the same pump..if possible? My current water pressure is good, but when I ran a hose up the hill to water cure the slab, the pressure coming out of the hose was a trickle. A friend told me to relocate the pressure tank and switch to the top house and there would be no problems. I am concerned bout water hammer when the water comes back down the hill if I do this. Could i locate a csv just before the tee to go up the hill and solve the problem? Do i need a pressure tank at each house? Can I leave the switch at the lower house or do I need to move it up the house? Thanks for any advice.

You're definitely in the hill country of Georgia. I have a sister that used to live in Ringgold. I used to own some farm ground at Cartersville.

Your first sentence states your problem. The new house is 230 ft higher in elevation than the old house and the well. It takes 100 psi at the lower house just to get water up the hill to the new house. To have 40 psi at the new house you will have to have 140 psi at the old house.

Yes a pressure reducing valve is going to be needed.

To be clarified I think he means the house is 230ft away with a 100ft elevation difference.


What pump you have is going to make or break your plan. You need to know the depth to water and the GPM rating of the pump(or model#). With a 1HP chances are good it can handle it.

100' in elevation is the same as 43 PSI, round up to 50 PSI for friction loss. So to get 50 PSI at the top of the hill you will need 100 PSI at the bottom. Your 85 gallon tank holds 25+ gallon of water at 30/50, but with 90/110 pressure switch setting it will only hold about 13 gallons, which is still plenty when using a CSV. I would leave the tank and switch at the bottom where the power is, and just set the CSV at 100 with a 90/110 pressure switch setting. The CSV will need to be before the tee to both houses. Leave the tank at your house and make sure there is not check valve in the line and it will work for both houses. But you will need to put a pressure reducing valve like our PRV1A on the line going into your house so you can reduce the pressure on that line from 100 to about 50 PSI.

Oh and you will most likely need to switch the pump to a 1.5HP, 10 GPM series to build that much pressure. A 7 GPM, 1HP would work, but I doubt that is what you have.

Yes you could put the pressure tank at the top of the hill, but then you would also need the pressure switch at the top of the hill and the power wires would need to be run all the way to the pump at the bottom.

I agree the existing pump needs to be examined to see if it will work, but even if it is a 7 GPM, 1HP, it may not be enough volume for two houses.

And yes you could use a booster pump after the tee to the upper house. It could take the 40 PSI coming in from the well pump and boost it to 90/110 for the house at the top of the hill. It would just be much simpler to have a well pump large enough to build the pressure needed.
