Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out for advice regarding a persistent plumbing issue at my house in Mauritius. Despite calling several plumbers, the problem with hot water pressure remains unresolved.

Here's my current setup:

  • A 1000L water tank is located at ground level.
  • This tank feeds another 1000L tank on the roof using an electric pump which is located in the basement.
  • I also have a solar thermal water heater installed on the roof.
  • I also have a single gas water heater supplying all 3 bathrooms. This is used when it is overcast.
  • I have to manually turn a valve to close off the hot water pipe which comes from the solar water heater during cloudy days
  • All bathrooms are located on the ground floor and are gravity-fed from the rooftop tank.
  • The bathroom located furthest from the water heater suffers from very low hot water pressure, while cold water pressure is acceptable.
The issue:

  • Poor hot water pressure, especially in the furthest bathroom.
  • The problem appears to be due to insufficient gravity pressure from the rooftop tank.
I'm considering redoing the pipework to solve this, but I'm not sure of the best approach. Would a pressure pump on the hot water line help? Should I consider a different layout or system?

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

You don't state how high your roof is above the plumbing. If 10' in height, then the formula .433 PSI (pounds/square inch) so you have maybe 4 PSI from gravity? You surely want to consider pressurizing one way or another.
