I am about to pull the trigger on a Fleck 5600SXT 64,000 grain softener, and would like a confirmation from the experts prior to purchase.
My data:
Hardness: 30.4 Grains/Gal
Iron: 0.4 PPM
Persons: 2
Usage: Not sure, but according to research, 60-75 Gal/person/day is typical.
Water type: Well

Per the sizing calculator on qualitywaterassociates.com, I believe a 2.0 ft3 (64,000 grain) unit should meet my needs and be quite salt efficient. I am thinking I should be able to regenerate about every 8 days, using 5-6 pounds/ft3 (total 10-12 lbs) per regeneration. It appears as though I am at the tipping point between a 64,000 and 48,000 grain softener. If you agree with my estimation, would I be better to error on the larger or smaller unit? Can you purchase too large of a softener?

My anticipated Valve Settings:
C: 36.4
BF: 7
DO: 8

Understand that using the softener for iron removal, you will need more cleaning and maintenance. Try searching for "iron out" in this forum.

I went with 6 rather than 5 lb/cuft.

Here is what I would start with:
System info (not programmed)
salt lb/cuft = 6 ; A choice ( efficiency vs capacity)
BLFC = 0.5 ; Brine Refill rate GPM
cubic ft resin = 2 ; ft3 resin = (nominal grains)/32,000
Raw hardness = 32 ; including any compensation
People = 2 ; gallons affects reserve calc
Estimated gal/day = 120 ; 60 gal per person typical calc
Estimated days/regen = 10.4 ; Computed days ignoring reserve

Fleck 5600SXT Settings:
DF = Gal ; Units
VT = dF1b ; Downflw/Upflw, Single Backwash
CT = Fd ; Meter Delayed regen trigger
NT = 1 ; Number of tanks
C = 40.0 ; capacity in 1000 grains
H = 32 ; Hardness-- compensate if needed
RS = rc ; rc says use gallons vs percent
RC = 120 ; Reserve capacity gallons
DO = 7 ; Day Override
RT = 2:00 ; Regen time (default 2 AM)
BW = 5 ; Backwash (minutes)
Bd = 60 ; Brine draw minutes
RR = 5 ; Rapid Rinse minutes
BF = 8 ; Brine fill minutes
FM = usually t0.7 ; flow meter, make note of what is there

Reach4. Thanks for quick response.
Perhaps there is something I don't understand. If you are recommending a regen every 7 days due to iron, per the chart, for greater salt efficiency, couldn't I regen with possibly 4 lbs/ft3 ( 8 lbs total) and set C for 30.4? Approx. 32 lbs/mo vs 48 lbs.mo?

I guess the biggest question at this point is: Should I be going with a 48,000 (1.5) vs a 64,000 (2.0) grain softener?

I am not experienced. I don't know if lower salt is so good with iron. Not saying one way or the other.

The smaller softener will regen more often, which is better at handling iron.

I would use the iron handling version of salt pellets, and that Res-up system sounds like it might be good... Super Iron Out is not an automated system, but it helps get rid of iron. Search for older references to "iron out" in this forum.
