I just got off the phone with a "Senior" support specialist. I too have the NPE-240A, and this is what was explained to me.
1. When its just the water heater there is a 30 minute/9 degree re-circulation default set up
2. Connecting a Hot Button or a Navilink controller to the tankless water heater disables this default because it is assumed that when you hook a Hot Button up you will only want it recirculating when you engage it to do so manually, and when you hook up a NaviLink that you will want to have schedules set up. If you have a hot button and a Navilink hooked up you get the option of one or the other in the app. not both.
3. This means that when the schedule is disabled it will NOT heat/recirculate.
4. It means that when outside of the schedule parameters it will NOT heat/recirculate.

I set my schedule for 7AM when I wake up to 10PM when Everyone would no longer take showers. From what I was told this means it will not run/recirculate overnight from 10:01PM to 6:59AM because of this schedule.

5. So having found this out, it would seem that the only way to engage a "hot button workaround" would be to enable the schedule...have it figure out/sense the reservoir tank is cold and begin heating the reservoir tank and therefore initiating a re-circulation. There is not a workaround if you have the schedule enabled; disabling it does not initiate a re-circulation.
You can still have the NaviLink app act as an on-demand hot water button.

Make sure the recirculating setting is set to “Always On”. Then in the app enable the weekly schedule. When you want hot water “on demand” outside of the schedule created in the app, toggle the weekly schedule button so it is disabled. At that moment the water heater will then revert to your “Always On” setting and immediately heat the water in your recirculation return line. Re-enable the weekly schedule in the app once the temperature of the inlet is close to the outlet (and at desired temp).

The key here (and I feel is not clearly mentioned in this thread) is to set the recirc setting to Always On. Using Intelligent or Weekly or Manual on the water heater will not give you the desired result.

First of all, thank you for posting this information, it is very helpful.
I just replaced my tanked WH with the 240A2 and have been reading through the posts about setting up the recirculation.

I have a dedicated recirculation line and with the tanked unit was using Lutron motion sensors to activate the recirculation pump. It worked flawlessly and only ran when there was motion in the "wet" rooms. I have tried a lot of different settings and still seeing some delays. Our home is 3600 SF, copper plumbing.

So, I am trying to figure out how to set the prior motion sensor system to the new tankless system.

I am able to get a contact closure for the Lutron system and can be set for either constant or momentary

I have a couple of questions hoping someone would have the answers
1- I understand the newer units have the "hot" button built in. Does it use the "Signal 1" input?
2- I am sure the hotbutton would be a momentary contact, so will the hot button input work with a constant closure? The reason is the motion sensors stay active while activity is present, so that would be a constant closure and we want the recirc to run continuously while there is movement in the wet room. I don't want to damage the board either if there is a constant closure for long periods.

Thank you.

Hello, I am trying to find out what the “auto” button does in the NavLink app. Does anyone here know?
